GEOGRAPHY Indonesia is the world's biggest archipelago. Most of these islands have low altitudes and are hot, humid, and tropical, as could be expected from the islands on and near the equator. Some of the bigger islands have mountains in the inner regions. The mountains have more moderate climates. Some reach very cold temperatures, too. There are two monsoon seasons, the arid one from June to September and the rainy one from December through March. The temperatures at the coastlines (there are 54, 716 km of coastline) vary only a few degrees through the year, 78° F to 82° F. For general information on the current weather in Jakarta, the nation's capital, see Hourly Forecast of Jakarta (scroll down on this website). The total area of the country is 1,919,440 sq km, although only 1,826,440 sq km of that is land area. The other 93,000 sq km is water. There is a total of 17,508 islands, but only about 6,000 are inhabited by people.
